We have a very good reason for celebrating America’s birth and existence. America’s Independence Day is about national freedom and personal freedom.
America is the greatest nation in history for political liberty, individualism, innovation, and national output. These qualities make America great. And the results speak for themselves: America is the most desired country to live in. The Gallup World Poll, UN International Migration Reports, Pew Research Center, and OECD migration studies all show that more people overwhelmingly want to move to the United States than to any other country.
The Elitist Rankings vs. The People’s Choice
Yet, contrary to the desires of people, the World Bank, the Economist Intelligence Unit, the Fragile States Index, Reporters Without Borders, and even the Gallup World Poll consistently rank America lower than other countries. The legacy media broadcasts these polls and feature stories of the problems with America.
How can the most desired nation be ranked so low in the indexes if it is the most desired nation?
It is all about the questions asked and the metrics considered desirable by the elites who rank countries. Elitist groups rank countries with high taxes, strong welfare programs, and consensus politics higher. In other words, they favor socialistic policies.
What the polls really show is that the most admired and desired nation in the world is less socialistic than the less desirable countries. And according to popular opinion, this is what makes America better.
This discrepancy between elitists and the population is yet another reminder that we do not want social engineers to tell us what is better for us. If the indexes and the elitists were correct, their rankings would match what people want most. But they do not. These polls are not measuring the outcome people want. They are measuring what the elitists want. They imagine a better world and then tell everyone else what they should want. But the desire of the people tells the real story.
Sadly, the secret of what has made America the most desirable nation on earth is not understood by most. That is the question I want to answer…
America’s Great Secret
What Has Made America the Most Desirable Place on Earth? Let me begin the answer with a simple question.
What’s the difference between being in prison and living in a communist society? In prison, at least they admit you’re not free — and the food is supposed to be bad.
It’s humorous, but it’s also revealing. Whenever we talk about government, elitists and socialist indexes insist their way leads to freedom. They want people to live in a prison while believing they are better off than those on the outside. Sadly, many believe them.
This is the way of Satan. He lies to make us think his way is better, but the outcome is always worse. Every time we hear elitist propaganda telling us America is not a great nation, let it remind us: they serve the devil’s bidding; they are liars just as their father is a liar.
So, what has made America such a great nation?
The American founders searched for the answer to what would produce the best and freest nation, and the answer they found should be studied by every national leader and every citizen. These men achieved the success of creating the greatness nation on earth with the longest surviving Constitution. Th reason for their success should be studied, taught, remembered, and enshrined.
Here is what the founders said about making the best possible nation.
George Washington, the father of America, Commander of the Continental Army, and first President of the United States wrote:
“It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.”
And in his Farewell Address (1796), he declared,
“Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.”
The famous founding statesmen, Patrick Henry stated,
“It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded… on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”
Benjamin Franklin, America’s leading diplomat, inventor, and founding elder statesman, summed it up well by quoting Psalm 127:1,
“Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.”
The message from America’s founders is clear: Rather than listen to elitists tell us how good it is in prison, we must go to the Bible and let God tell us what is good. If we follow their lead, America can continue to be great. To succeed in anything, we must follow those who have succeeded. We must not follow the losers.
We don’t need to listen to the elitists — and we have every reason not to. Instead, we should listen to the men who gave us the greatest nation on earth with the longest surviving Constitution. To their credit, the founders of America gave us the government and nation that people around the world most desire to live in. They succeeded in achieving their goal.
The founders of America were convinced that we should follow God — that the best laws to live by are His laws. Two hundred fifty years later, we see the fruit of what they could only hope for. They were right. The elitists are wrong.
If the Nation Is Broken, We Are Not Doing It God’s Way
Scripture asks a question we should all ask:
“If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3)
Hidden inside that question is the solution: If the foundation is broken, the righteous must rebuild it. The verse specifically asks, what can the righteous do?
In other words: Good government requires good people. Righteous governments require righteous people.
Why do we need God? Because God makes things right. He makes people right. He makes the people necessary for good government — and government is nothing more than people.
This is why Proverbs 14:34 declares:
“Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.”
Righteousness lifts a nation. Sin destroys it.
This verse tells us how to build a great nation. This is how you build good government. This is what has made America great.
And the fact that America was founded on these ideas — despite human flaws — is a testimony to the power of God’s ways. His ways work better than any other way, even when imperfectly executed by imperfect people.
The Founders’ Most Profound Insight
When the founders gathered in Philadelphia in 1787, they carried one insight above all others:
God does not build nations on the power of rulers, on the collective wisdom of a population, or on written constitutions. He builds nations on the character of the people.
Not the ruler’s brilliance. Not the people’s intelligence. Not the government’s design.
Character is the foundation of national strength.
This was the profound insight of the American founding. It guided the crafting of the Constitution and gave us the greatest nation on earth.
The Need For God
The founders were not naïve. They understood human nature with brutal clarity.
James Madison, the Father of the American Constitution, wrote,
“If men were angels, no government would be necessary.”
Translation: People are not angels. Rulers are not angels. Government is necessary.
Patrick Henry warned,
“Bad men cannot make good citizens.”
Benjamin Franklin added,
“Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom.”
And after the Constitution was signed, a woman asked Franklin,
“Sir, what kind of government have you given us?”
He replied,
“A republic… if you can keep it.”
In other words: When people stop being virtuous, they will no longer have good government or freedom.
The founders did not expect the government they created to last long — because they knew human nature.
They believed:
- People are not naturally trustworthy.
- Rulers are not naturally trustworthy.
- Power corrupts everyone.
- Therefore, everyone must be restrained.
But this raises a question: If everyone needs restraint, who runs the prison?
This is a logical question — but it is not the right question.
The better and more profound question is:
How do you make the citizens good?
The founders’ answer was revolutionary:
To escape the prison of oppressive government, a nation must have citizens made good by God.
How Do You Make People Good?
This profound and insightful answer is the reason the founders insisted on religious education.
George Washington declared,
“Religion and morality are indispensable supports.”
Samuel Adams, the father of the American Revolution, tied liberty directly to God’s work in the heart:
“The religion of Jesus Christ… is the best security for the liberties of a people.”
Noah Webster, the father of American education, wrote,
“The Christian religion is the most important and one of the first things in which all children ought to be instructed.”
Gouverneur Morris, the man who physically wrote the Constitution, said,
“Religion is the only solid basis of good morals.”
Why did they say this?
Because through God’s work of salvation — the new birth transforms the heart with imputed righteousness. Good government requires good people. Good people require a good God to make them good.
America’s Greatness
America is great because God is great. His ways make all things good and great.
Alexis de Tocqueville, the French philosopher and great interpreter of American democracy, wrote,
“Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power.”
America is great because America’s churches were good.
Whereas oppressive governments trust in people. Good governments trust in God.
James Madison delivered the clarifying insight and a warning:
“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
In other words:
The character of the people — not the Constitution — preserves liberty and makes government good.
As the religion of America goes, so goes the nation.
How God Builds Nations
Here is the truth that shaped the founders, the Constitution, and the destiny of America:
God does not build nations on the power of rulers or on the collective wisdom of a population. He builds nations on the character of the people.
This single insight explains both the rise of America and the decline of nations that trust in human strength alone. The founders understood that no constitution — no matter how brilliantly crafted — can preserve liberty if the people themselves lack virtue. A nation’s greatness is never secured merely by its laws, its leaders, or its institutions. It is secured by the moral and spiritual condition of its citizens.
With this insight into biblical truth, it is clear that the greatest work of citizenship is the work of God — to win souls, transform hearts, and disciple people to follow Him. This is how good citizens are made. And good citizens build great nations.
A nation cannot rise higher than the character of its people. A government cannot be better than the morality of those who elect it. A constitution cannot protect freedom if the people do not protect righteousness.
This is why the founders placed such emphasis on religion and morality. They knew that liberty requires self-government, and self-government requires a transformed heart. Only God can produce that transformation.
Trust In God
This requires trusting in God — not in human systems, not in political elites, not in social engineers who imagine they know better than the people. It requires returning to the One who alone can make people good. When a nation looks to God, and trusts in Him, He will make them good. They, in turn, will enjoy the fruit of good government.
This truth is more than a slogan. It is a declaration of dependence on the only One who can make a people righteous, a nation strong, and a future secure.
