From Atheism to Faith

I spent years searching for truth and wrestling with doubts. Finding God cured my atheism — and learning to pray carried me through cancer.

My Story: A Journey Of Looking for God

I wasn’t raised to believe in God. Church was moral training, not a relationship, and God was just an idea — distant, abstract, and unreal. As I grew older, my thoughts shifted from believing… to questioning… to doubting… and finally rejecting. But beneath all of it was a deeper struggle: I wanted truth, not tradition. I wanted evidence strong enough to make an honest, intelligent decision.

Like many people, I wasn’t searching for religion. I was searching for answers. My greatest fear wasn’t being wrong — it was believing something that wasn’t true. And so I struggled.

The Undeniable Laws Of Science Lead To God

I entered the University of California at Irvine as a committed atheist and pre‑medical student who trusted science above everything else. But the deeper I studied, the more the evidence pointed in a direction I didn’t expect.

  • The first law of thermodynamics showed that energy cannot create itself.
  • The second law showed that order does not arise from chaos.
  • The law of biogenesis showed that life only comes from life.

Atheism required me to believe the opposite of all three.

It became more scientifically reasonable to believe in God than to deny Him. To reject God in light of the laws of thermodynamics and biogenesis would have been irrational and contrary to the clearest scientific evidence about our world.

Praying to Experience the Reality of God

Once I knew God existed, I wanted to know Him.

I began weekly Bible studies with Christian apologists from the Christian Research Institute under Dr. Walter Martin, the “Bible Answer Man.” Their answers strengthened my mind and showed me that faith is not blind and Scripture is not fragile.

But prayer… prayer changed everything.

Bible study gave me understanding, but prayer gave me relationship. In prayer, the reality of God became undeniable — personal, present, and powerful.

God Answered My Prayer

I prayed for a church with the same doctrine and practice described in the book of Acts — full of zeal, sincerity, and daily devotion. A year later, God answered.

He led me from California to Mission Blvd. Baptist Church in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where I entered daily discipleship under Pastor Dr. Brian Disney. That decision shaped the rest of my life.

I didn’t just learn about God. I met Him. And now, I talk to Him every day.

My Ministry Journey

I gave up my ambition for medical school to follow God’s call. I married my childhood sweetheart, Colleen, and together we raised our family while serving Christ.

I earned a Ph.D. in microbiology, specializing in immunology and infectious diseases — training that opened doors for me to speak on science and faith, creation and evolution, and to debate evolutionists across the country.

I have led evangelism campaigns, built discipleship ministries, founded the Leadership Training Institute of America and the Creation Insights Ministry, and preached the gospel around the world.

But one passion rose above them all: prayer.

A Mountain of Bad News

In 1989, everything changed. I was diagnosed with stage 4B Hodgkin’s lymphoma — cancer had already spread into my bones and throughout my body. Chemotherapy was my only option.

For a year, I had been studying what it meant to pray prayers that “move mountains.” Now I had a mountain of my own.

I prayed. God healed.

But in 1994, the cancer returned — this time with survival odds so low they couldn’t even be calculated.

God Moves Mountains

With two babies at home, my wife and I prepared for the possibility of death. Yet through the pain, God taught me what I had longed to understand — how to pray prayers that move mountains.

By God’s grace, I finished treatment in 1995. More than thirty years later, I remain cancer‑free.

I don’t just teach about prayer. I have lived it and reaped the fruit of understanding how prayer works. This makes me even more passionate about teaching others how to pray.

A Mountain Worth Making a Decision About

If the Spirit of God is tugging at your heart, don’t resist. Talk to Him. Ask Him to calm your fears and show you the truth.

I did — and it was the best decision of my life. I didn’t have to abandon common‑sense reasoning or science. God Himself invites you:

“Come now, and let us reason together…” (Isaiah 1:18)

Believing in God is smart and reasonable. Living for God is smart and practical.
